Chapter Sixteen

Cora thought about the Magickal community having people who might be capable of murder. It seemed that there were people everywhere who were capable of heinous deeds, no matter if they were Magickal or non-Magickal.

“Danny and Damian were co-owners of Quartz, the prominent fashion magazine. My best friend Ashley works there, and just recently got a promotion. She called me earlier, frantic that I come by and speak with her. The police are zeroing in on her boyfriend, Dominic as the prime suspect in the Disdainamo murders.” She shrugged. “I don’t know why because I see no evidence to support such a claim. I’ve checked into his background, and the only things I can find are a few petty charges when he was a teenager. The worst he ever did was steal from a gas station convenience store. Once, it was some candy, but he was old enough to get into trouble. Another time, it was a can of Pringles chips and a bottle of soda. I mean, I see no reason to think someone like that would commit two murders.”

Ali shook her head. “I don’t either. All teenagers do stupid things, and that sounds like what this Dominic did, too. Were there any offenses that included violence of any kind?”

“No, not even trying to argue with the arresting officers. He always went peacefully and did his time accordingly. Ashley is understandably upset. The cops even pointed out, after the second murder and them pointing the finger at Dominic, that Ashley had been spotted at the scene of the first murder. They’re not wrong, she was there. So was I. We were actually having our weekly dinner just like we always do. But that means nothing. It’s not like Ashley killed either one of the Disdainamo cousins. We were just having dinner.”

“That’s terrible. I can’t imagine how she feels,” Ali said, sitting forward in her seat.

“I know.” Cora put both hands on Mizzy’s back and became very solemn. “I kind of committed myself to something.”

“I know that look, Cora. Your mother used to have the same look when she had taken on more than she could handle. Are you in some sort of trouble? I will help you. You can tell me anything.”

“I’m not in trouble, but I told Ashley that I would...well...” she scrunched up her face, not knowing how her aunt would react to what she had to say. “I told her that I would do my best to play Nancy Drew and prove Dominic’s innocence, assuming he is innocent, of course. I’m just not entirely sure I knew what I was signing up for, though. I mean, we always loved Nancy Drew. The mysteries, the excitement. But I don’t have any authority at all. I don’t want to leave her hanging, but I don’t want to get into trouble with the law, either. I mean, I’m still going to Nancy Drew the heck out of this, but just know that I might have a brush or two with the cops because of it.
